Bayern Munich v Tottenham

It’s rather sad to see what could have been one of the marquee games of the Champions League group stage reduced to a dead rubber.

bet365 pre-match odds: Bayern Munich 4/11; Draw 9/2; Tottenham 6/1

But there’s no getting away from the fact that there’s nothing at stake here – Bayern have already won the group and Spurs will finish second, even if they are hammered 7-2 as they were in London back in the autumn.

Plenty of player rotation can be expected and you’d have to be wary of backing the hosts at around 1/3, even if they have won five out of five in this competition so far.

Domestically they’ve lost three of their last five in the Bundesliga so things aren’t going that well.

Spurs have certainly picked up under Jose Mourinho and they’ve scored 16 goals in his five games in charge. They’ve now found the target in their last 11 games, while Bayern have netted in every contest.

Both teams to score looks highly likely but rather than getting involved at 4/7, this looks a game to be backing a big price to small stakes given the uncertainty around how the teams will approach it.

And 19/2 about Spurs winning with both teams finding the net looks to have potential given the hosts’ stuttering form.

There’s also a cards angle to consider.

This will be referee Gianluca Rocchi’s final UEFA appointment – he’s off the list due to his age in 2020 – so he’s unlikely to want to go out as the centre of attention by flashing the cards around.

Given what’s at stake, it’s not hard to suggest this won’t be the most hard-fought game you’ll see so a punt on no cards at 14/1 looks worth a try.

More realistic is the under 2.5 cards bet which is offered at 2/1.

Bayern Munich 3-1 Tottenham Hotspur - Watch Highlights

    Date published: 12/12/2019 2:03:56 PM

Bayern Munich made it a perfect six Group B wins on Wednesday night as they overcame Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at the Allianz Arena.

With Bayern already guaranteed top spot and Tottenham safely through as runners-up, both managers decided to make changes as the hosts brought in Javi Martinez, Benjamin Pavard, Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Perisic and Serge Gnabry from the 2-1 Bundesliga defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.

As for Spurs, Jose Mourinho made six alterations from the 5-0 thumping of Burnley, with Danny Rose, Juan Foyth, Kyle Walker-Peters, Christian Eriksen and Giovani Lo Celso drafted in, while Ryan Sessegnon made his first Champions League.

The Bavarians started the game on the front foot and they deservedly took the lead in the 14th minute when Kingsley Coman, who went off injured shortly after the goal with what looked to be a serious knee problem, slotted the ball into the bottom-right-corner after being left unmarked in the box.

Spurs found an equaliser on the 20th minute when Sessegnon grabbed his first Champions League goal, smashing a rocket of a half-volley past Germany international Manuel Neuer at his near post.

Bayern restored their advantage on the 45th minute when Thomas Muller, on as a substitute for Coman, poked home from six yards out after Alphonso Davies’ low effort cannoned back off the post.

It could have been 3-1 before the break had it not been for Argentine keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who tipped Brazil international Coutinho’s sensational 20-yard effort onto the crossbar.

Former Liverpool forward Coutinho did grab a goal in the 64th minute when he curled in an effort from the edge of the penalty area, beating the despairing dive of Gazzaniga, who was arguably Spurs’ best player in the game.

Bayern saw out the 3-1 victory in comfortable fashion, winning all six group matches in the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history, and they head into the last-16 stage of the competition as Group B winners.
