Chelsea have their work cut out for them this weekend as they look to overturn a three-goal deficit in their Last 16 Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.
Frank Lampard’s men travel to the Allianz Arena as they look to do something that hasn’t been done since November; win away in Munich.
The last team to inflict a defeat on the Bavarian side at the Allianz Arena was Bayer Leverkusen when they claimed a 2-1 in the last Bundesliga round of 2019.
Winning is one thing however, in order to progress Chelsea will also need to score at least three goals to draw and at least four goals to progress in normal time.
Liverpool were the last British side to beat Bayern away. This came in March 2019 when Jurgen Klopp’s side picked up a 3-1 win at the Allianz Arena. Five months earlier, the German champions lost 3-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.
None of those scores however, would be enough to see Chelsea through into the next round in normal time. If the Blues are to progress without the need of extra time, they’ll need to pull off a Real Madrid-esque performance from 2014. That was the last time that Bayern lost 4-0 at home and this will no doubt be the motivation for Frank Lampard’s men.
Looking at the betting, the bookies clearly don’t fancy Chelsea’s chances with the Blues priced at 13/2 and Bayern being the favourites at 1/3.
However, let’s not forget that the Blues did enjoy a decent end to the season having won five from their last eight competitive games, having qualified for the top four and having made the FA Cup final.
Clearly there’s a lot of fight in this young Chelsea squad but, when compared to Bayern’s home record, their head to head record and their form in 2020, it’s difficult to bet against the Germans.
With this in mind, our recommendation is to back the home side to win 2-1 at the current price of 7/1.
Three of the last four competitive games between the two clubs have been closely contested. Chelsea won’t want to see a repeat of the first leg and with Bayern not playing competitively in over a month, this may be closer than most think.
