Two teams who finished in Ligue 1’s top four last season go head to head as Lille host Rennes at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Last season Rennes pipped their upcoming rivals to a third-place finish; thereby taking the last remaining Champions League spot and leaving Lille to feed on the scraps – or in other words, leave them with the Europa League.
This was a big blow to Les Dogues who certainly could have used a financial boost after posting losses of €100m in 2018.
At the start of the month, the club were given Financial Fair Pay restrictions after running up a big deficit and therefore, will face additional hurdles in future European competitions. Nevertheless, life goes on for Lille as they look to make a strong start to this new Ligue Un campaign.
The team led by Christophe Galtier will be looking to replicate the performance they put on the last time Rennes visited them. On that occasion, Lille took an early lead and held out to take all three points.
Historically, Rennes have struggled away at Lille and since 1990 they have only managed one win at the ground in 27 visits.
The bookmakers have picked up on this stat and have made Lille the 13/10 favourites to win the season opener. Rennes, meanwhile, are currently available at the price of 12/5.
Bearing in mind Lille’s home record over Rennes plus, the fact that all five of their most recent league victories have all been to-nil, our recommendation is to back a 1-0 win for the home side. At the time of writing, this bet is priced at 11/2.
