Wolverhampton Wanderers v Tottenham

Wolves are expected to revert back to the team which drew 2-2 with Brighton last weekend when they host Tottenham.

Raul Jimenez is available after being suspended for Thursday’s 4-0 Europa League win over Besiktas while Diogo Jota, who scored a hat-trick after coming off the bench, will return to the starting line up.

Morgan Gibbs-White (back) and Willy Boly (fractured leg) remain out for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Tottenham will recall their big guns for the trip.

Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier were all rested for Wednesday’s Champions League game at Bayern Munich, but will come back at Molineux.

Harry Winks is back in training, but Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Ben Davies, Erik Lamela and Michel Vorm are all injured.

Wolves provisional squad: Patricio, Ruddy, Doherty, Coady, Vinagre, Kilman, Jonny, Bennett, Sanderson, Perry, Dendoncker, Saiss, Moutinho, Neves, Jordao, Jimenez, Jota, Cutrone, Campbell, Traore, Neto.

Tottenham provisional squad: Gazzaniga, Austin, Aurier, Foyth, Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Rose, Vertonghen, Winks, Dier, Sissoko, Lo Celso, Eriksen, Dele, Moura, Son, Kane, Parrott.

Wolves v Tottenham

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur have a tough test on Sunday afternoon as they visit a Wolves side who have set a precedent in taking scalps.

888sport pre-match odds: Wolves 9/4, Draw 49/20, Tottenham 5/4

Spurs make the trip up to Wolverhampton one place and one point behind their opponents as they look to close the gap on the top four, with Frank Lampard’s Chelsea in fourth in poor form and giving them an opportunity.

Mourinho has made a good start to life in the Tottenham dugout with three wins from four Premier League games, as many wins as Mauricio Pochettino had managed in charge for the first 12 of the season, leaving the club in 12th place when his surprise, sudden departure was announced.

His one league defeat was a 2-1 loss away at his former club Manchester United, which suggests his team are still not quite equipped for the tougher tests in the league like this one, so a win here would represent a major step forward. However, last weekend’s 5-0 rout of Burnley was quite brilliant and arguably their best performance of the season so far.

A much-changed line-up in midweek - in a dead rubber of a game, ultimately not changing their finish as the group stage runners-up in the Champions League group - saw them 3-1 to Bundesliga champions, but there are few conclusions that can be drawn from that beyond the squad’s peripheral figures.

Harry Kane, who has 10 goals in his last 10 appearances for club and country, will return here having been rested for the trip entirely. Son Heung-min, who has five assists and five goals from his last five starts for Spurs, will return to the starting line-up.

Wolves, however, should provide a tough test. They’re on their longest unbeaten run in the top flight for 40 years, drawing or winning their last 11 league games, while they’ve also progressed in their Europa League group.

After a slow start to the season, they’re now performing well on domestic and European fronts and will be confident here having won or drawn against Man City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham (already) since their return to the top flight at the start of last season.

This should be a competitive, tightly-contested game. With Wolves’ record against the traditional ‘big six’, Molineux advantage, and their current unbeaten run, we recommend going for a draw here.

Wolves 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur - Match Highlights

    Date published: 12/15/2019 5:56:56 PM

Defender Jan Vertonghen headed home an injury-time winner as Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux.

Wolves supremo Nuno Espirito Santo named the same starting XI which began the 2-2 draw with Brighton last weekend, while Spurs stuck with the same line-up which started the 5-0 victory at home to Burnley.

Both sides opened up by showing plenty of attacking intent and it was the visitors who broke the deadlock with eight minutes played.

Home keeper Rui Patricio parried an initial effort from Son Heung-min, but was beaten as Lucas Moura picked up the loose ball and cracked a shot into the roof of the net.

Patricio was back in the action shortly afterwards to deny Dele Alli, who had tricked his way past a couple of defenders.

Wolves responded with Adama Traore forcing a block from Paulo Gazzaniga, while Raul Jimenez sent an effort wide as the hosts upped the pressure.

Mexican striker Jimenez then passed up another opportunity after being set up by Diogo Jota, before Eric Dier rattled an upright for Spurs after linking up with Alli.

The second half opened with Gazzaniga making a good claim from a Matt Doherty cross, before the Spurs keeper was down quickly to keep out a low drive from Jimenez.

Harry Kane then took a tumble in the Wolves area, but fleeting penalty claims were waived away by referee Stuart Attwell, before Alli curled a shot just wide from the edge of the box.

Wolves found the equaliser their overall performance deserved midway through the second half as Traore took a pass from Jimenez, advanced and smashed a right-foot shot beyond the despairing dive of Gazzaniga.

Romain Saiss went close for Wolves with a header but Gazzaniga made another fine save and that proved to be even more crucial when Vertonghen netted a Spurs winner in stoppage time, meeting a Christian Eriksen corner with a firm, downward header.
