Southampton vs Tottenham

Southampton will hope to move away from the relegation zone when they welcome Tottenham to St Mary's this weekend.

bet365 Pre-Match Odds: Southampton 11/4, Draw 13/5, Tottenham 10/11

MATCH PREVIEW

The Saints are just two points above the drop zone heading into this weekend's fixtures.

With Cardiff chasing them, Southampton know they cannot afford to slip up on the south coast.

Southampton have won just one of their last six matches and they will be without star striker Danny Ings this weekend.

Ings is struggling with a hamstring problem and the Saints coaching staff have decided to wait for their following game in three weeks time.

Midfielder Mario Lemina is nearing a return after abdominal surgery.

Tottenham head into the game in good spirits after beating Borussia Dortmund in midweek in the Champions League.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino could include Dele Alli for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain seven weeks ago.

Harry Winks is a doubt with a recurring groin problem, while Eric Dier returned from tonsillitis to play on Tuesday night.

Ralph Hassenhuttl's troops have not won any of their last six home league games against Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2012.

BETTING ADVICE

Following a three-match winless run in the Premier League, Tottenham will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to St. Mary’s.

After facing successive defeats to Burnley and Chelsea, Spurs then went on to draw against Arsenal at Wembley. This three-match run has all but ended Tottenham’s title challenge and has opened up the race for third place.

Spurs now find themselves only three points above fourth placed Manchester United and five points above sixth placed Chelsea.

With that in mind, this upcoming clash against Saints does feel like a must win encounter for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Southampton are in a similar predicament to their opponents. Ralph Hasenhuttl got off to a great start as the new man in charge of the club however, in recent weeks points have been hard to come by.

Three defeats in four games has seen Southampton dip in and out of the relegation zone. With Cardiff on a three-match losing run, Saints are currently two-points above the drop zone.

The recommendation in this game is to back the away side. Spurs were magnificent as they dismantled Dortmund in their Champions League tie and should have too much confidence and quality for this struggling Southampton side.

    Southampton 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

    Date published: 3/9/2019 6:23:00 PM

A thrilling second-half display saw Southampton come from behind to beat Tottenham 2-1 at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday.

Spurs had looked in complete control of the match during the opening exchanges, particularly as they twice hit the woodwork. Firstly when Maya Yoshida deflected a Harry Kane cross against his own post and then, just minutes later, when Christian Eriksen's free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar.
Eventually, Tottenham's pressure told when on 26 minutes they deservedly took the lead as Kane lashed home from close range after the returning Dele Alli floated a perfectly timed pass over the top of the Southampton defence.
Southampton barely laid a glove on Tottenham during the first half and their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl made two changes at half-time with Josh Sims and Shane Long coming on.
Those alterations certainly had the desired effect as Southampton dominated the second period, with Long, Nathan Redmond and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg all going close before the hour mark.
At one stage it looked like the hosts would regret missing so many chances, but they eventually drew level on 76 minutes, as right-back Yann Valery made it two goals in two games, converting Stuart Armstrong's pull-back that somehow dissected a static Spurs defence.
Spurs were left reeling after that and just five minutes later Southampton grabbed what proved to be the winning goal when James Ward-Prowse curled a superb free-kick, from fully 25 yards out, into the top corner - a goal worthy of winning any game.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who was watching from the stands due to his two-match touchline ban, brought on Fernando Llorente late on, but it was to no avail as Spurs failed to win for a fourth Premier League game in a row.
They now face a fight just to end the season in the top four, while Southampton have taken a giant step towards safety after recording back-to-back home wins in the league for the first time since December 2016.
