Sheffield United v Norwich

The two sides that finished in the Championship’s top two last season meet at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon as Sheffield United host Norwich City.

They’ve had contrasting fortunes since making it up to the top flight last season; Sheffield United have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League, miraculously, while Norwich come into this weekend’s set of fixtures bottom of the table and facing a gargantuan task if they’re to avoid relegation.

Sheffield United had a weekend off last week with their match against Aston Villa postponed due to the League Cup final, but they returned to action in midweek, pushed to extra time in the FA Cup by Reading but eventually won out through Billy Sharp scoring the match-winner.

David McGoldrick also scored a rare goal at the Madejski, after just two minutes. He’ll likely continue to be a vital outlet for Blades here, but he’s not scored a Premier League goal in over 1300 minutes.

It’s a fully-fit squad available for the hosts here, who will be continue to keep their strong form going, only losing to Liverpool and Man City (twice) over the past three months in the league.

Norwich, meanwhile, will be full of confidence after going away to Tottenham and winning on penalties in midweek, and getting a well-deserved 1-0 win over third-place Leicester last Friday.

The Canaries remain bottom but they’re now within six points of safety and have given themselves half a chance of staying up.

We recommend backing Sheffield United to win, with both teams to score. Chris Wilder’s Blades are unbeaten in their last four meetings with Norwich, winning three and drawing one. In all four of those meetings, the Canaries have scored, though.

Sheffield United v Norwich Team News

Sheffield United will look to complete the league double over Norwich for the first time since 1939 when they meet at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

United finished second to Norwich in the Championship last season, separated by five points, but their respective Premier League campaigns have been worlds apart.

The Blades have their sights set on Europe, while the Canaries are rooted to the bottom of the table and fighting for their lives.

Chris Wilder’s men have a game in hand on most of their rivals after last weekend’s meeting with Aston Villa was postponed due to the Carabao Cup final.

However, a win this weekend on home soil could propel them as high as fifth if results elsewhere go their way.

Sheffield United earned a spot in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Tuesday, beating Reading, and Wilder insists they are ready to go “full tilt” on both fronts for the remainder of the season.

Billy Sharp scored the winner against the Royals and could be rewarded with a rare start in the Premier League, while Enda Stevens is available after a calf injury.

John Fleck is also expected to come back into the starting XI after being rested for the midweek cup encounter.

Norwich also sealed a spot in the last eight of the FA Cup, after a penalty shoot-out victory at Tottenham, but their involvement in the competition could be detrimental to their relegation battle.

Last weekend’s win at home to Leicester has moved them to within six points of safety, with 10 games left to play. The Canaries have won just once on the road all season – a 2-0 win at Everton – and they have lost four of the last five.

Creative midfielder Emiliano Buendia is rated as a major doubt after limping out of the FA Cup win in north London.

Norwich have won on their last two Premier League visits to Sheffield United, with both matches coming back in 1993.

Sheffield United 1-0 Norwich City - Match HIghlights

    Date published: 3/7/2020 6:27:55 PM

Sheffield United moved into the Premier League’s top-six with a hard-fought 1-0 win against the bottom club Norwich City at Bramall Lane.

The Blades made just one change from the last league game, a 1-1 home draw with Brighton, as John Lundstram replaced Sander Berge in midfield as the club record signing dropped to the bench.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke named the same side that started their 1-0 Premier League win against Leicester eight days ago.

The hosts engineered the first effort on target in the fourth minute when Billy Sharp lifted the ball into the penalty area for Ollie McBurnie who had a free header which Tim Krul did well to tip over his own crossbar.

The Blades continued to look the more likely to open the scoring only for Norwich to go close out of nothing on 14 minutes when some sloppy defending gifted a chance to Teemu Pukki who rattled the post from a tight angle.

Just as the contest became fairly evenly balanced, United got their noses in front on 36 minutes when Sharp got on the end of Lundstram’s superb right-wing cross and headed in his third goal in four matches.

The goal lifted the hosts and Lundstram almost added a second on 39 minutes but watched his effort drop just wide from the edge of the area.

McBurnie and Lundstram both tested Krul in the closing stages of the half as Norwich were no doubt relieved to go in at the break trailing by just a solitary goal.

Norwich started the second half brightly and put pressure on the hosts’ backline with Josip Drmic squandering a chance when he sent a header wide of Dean Henderson’s far corner.

The Blades responded with Chris Basham’s sublime flick over Kenny McLean setting himself up in front of goal, but he then poked his effort over the top.

Norwich remained firmly in the game and they were denied an equaliser on 78 minutes when he firstly denied Ben Godfrey and recovered to brilliantly stop Mario Vrancic from converting the follow-up with David McGoldrick then hooking the ball clear via his own crossbar.

The Canaries went close again on 84 minutes with a Jamal Lewis volley again forcing a smart save from Henderson.

However, they couldn’t find an equaliser as the Blades sit in sixth spot and are just two points off the top-four, while Norwich stay bottom and are six points off safety.
