Norwich v Watford

The Premier League’s bottom two go head-to-head in a massive game for both sides on Friday night.

The odds make it virtually a 50-50 game which might surprise some. After all, Norwich have beaten champions Manchester City at Carrow Road this season.

However, there are good reasons for the pricing and Watford look capable of breaking their win duck.

They’ve undoubtedly improved defensively since Quique Sanchez Flores returned to the club, keeping clean sheets against both Bournemouth and Sheffield United, while they also earned a 1-1 draw at Spurs.

Goals have been the problem but facing Norwich’s leaky back-line looks to be just what the doctor ordered to cure that.

The Canaries have shipped at least two goals in four of their five home games so far, while only Aston Villa have conceded more shots per game in the top flight. In that list, Watford are down in 12th, reflecting their improved defence.

In addition, the Hornets are in the top half of the shots-taken-per-game table which suggests it is the finishing which has been an issue, not the creation.

With that in mind, it may be worth backing Gerard Deulofeu to find the target.

He’s been a very streaky player during his time in the Premier League, both at Everton and Watford.

Watford fans haven’t since the best of him this season but he’s caught the eye in recent games and managed to get off the mark for the season last weekend. That was from the penalty spot (significant in itself to backers) but the confidence will have been boosted.

Deulofeu bagged nine goals in his last 14 games of last season to support the streaky point and the skilful Spaniard looks capable of making mincemeat out of one of the league’s worst defences. He’s 11/5 for a goal at any time and 7/1 to bag the opener.

Norwich City v Watford team news

Troy Deeney is set to return to the Watford squad to face Norwich, who have midfielder Mario Vrancic available for the first time since August.

Both Deeney and Vrancic have been out since the first few weeks of the campaign but could make their returns on Friday night at Carrow Road when the bottom two in the Premier League face off.
Deeney has been absent with a knee injury, which required surgery, but has been back in full training this week and boss Quique Sanchez Flores must decide if the key striker is fit enough to start or be named among the substitutes.
The Hornets have struggled for goals in the captain’s absence, registering just six all season and they sit bottom of the table still without a win from 11 games. Etienne Capoue and Ismaila Sarr have also returned to training and will be assessed ahead of the game, while Craig Cathcart has overcome a back spasm.
Sanchez Flores is pleased to have Deeney back in contention for the first time since he returned to the club as boss in September.
“He’s ready to come to the group and go to the list,” he said. “He is ready and we will make the final decision. It’s very good news.”
Norwich midfielder Vrancic has recovered from a calf injury and then illness and is expected to be in Daniel Farke’s squad on Friday, while Ibrahim Amadou and Todd Cantwell are now fully fit and could start.
Grant Hanley and Christoph Zimmermann remain out but are set to make their returns to action after the international break that follows this weekend’s Premier League action.
Hanley has not played since the defeat to Chelsea on August 24 and has since undergone groin surgery while Zimmermann has had an ankle injury since the end of August.
The Canaries have managed just a point from their last six games and would sink to the bottom if Watford were to secure their first win of the season on Friday.

    Norwich City 0-2 Watford

Watford secured their first win of the Premier League season as they overcome fellow strugglers Norwich City 2-0 at Carrow Road on Friday night.

Watford, who started the game rock-bottom of the standings on five points, made the perfect start when Spanish forward Gerard Deulofeu picked up a loose ball from Emiliano Buendia before driving into the penalty and firing a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Roberto Pereyra was forced off for the visitors after picking up what looked to be a hamstring issue on the 31st minute, bringing on Andre Gray as his replacement, and that change almost worked wonders for the Hornets when the striker was narrowly denied a goal after a great block in the area by Ben Godfrey.

Although enjoying good amounts of possession, Norwich struggled to create any clear-cut chances and they came closest to scoring in the dying seconds of the first half, when Buendia blazed over from around 12 yards out after Teemu Pukki had cut the ball back to him.

Watford got the decisive second goal in the 52nd minute when Gray’s audacious back-heel finish from six yards out, which was going on target, clipped off left-back Jamal Lewis on the way through before nestling in the bottom-left corner.

Norwich were handed hope on the 66th minute when Christian Kabasele was shown a second yellow card for a silly foul on Josip Drmic, giving the visitors well over 20 minutes to survive with just 10 men on the field.

Tom Trybull and Lewis did call Ben Foster into action with long-range strikes but the Canaries were unable to find the back of the net, going down 2-0 at Carrow Road.

That result has seen Norwich drop to the foot of the table, while Watford have climbed to 18th in the standings, still three points from safety.
