Norwich v Arsenal

Under-pressure Arsenal manager Unai Emery could face the prospect of the sack if his Gunners lose to newly-promoted, relegation-battlers Norwich on Sunday.

This is the worst form that Arsenal have been in for over 20 years. They’ve failed to win any of their last five Premier League games, and they’ve won just one of the last nine in all competitions - an unconvincing last-gasp 3-2 win over Vitoria Guimaraes in the Europa League.

Their misery continued on Thursday evening as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in a half-empty Emirates, which came hot on the heels of their poor 2-2 draw with Southampton last weekend, in which Alexandre Lacazette’s injury-time equaliser rescued them a point from a game that they performed abjectly in.

Given the mood at Arsenal at present, it might do them some good to play away from home this weekend. But their record on the road doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny; it’s no wins in the league, and one win in all competitions (eight games) since they edged past Newcastle 1-0 on the opening weekend. Only four Premier League teams have picked up fewer points on the road.

Norwich will have their tails up after beating Everton 2-0 away from home last week. But they’ll be happy to return to Carrow Road, where two of their total three wins have come this season (including a remarkable 3-2 victory over the champions Man City).

Star striker Teemu Pukki still hasn’t found the back of the net in his last eight appearances for the Canaries now, after starting the season with six goals in five games. But he looked dangerous last week and assisted one of the goals against Everton, and scored three goals in two games for Finland in the international break.

Given Arsenal’s dire form, we recommend backing Norwich to get something out of this game, and for Pukki to end his goal drought.

    Norwich City 2-2 Arsenal

Skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang twice levelled the scores as Arsenal were made to fight hard for a point in a 2-2 draw at Norwich City.

The hosts showed one change to the team which won 2-0 at Everton last time out, with Ibrahim Amadou taking the place of Alex Tettey in midfield.

Interim Gunners boss Freddie Ljungberg shuffled his pack, with four alterations from the 2-2 draw with Southampton – meaning starts for Sead Kolasinac, Shkodran Mustafi, Joe Willock and Granit Xhaka.

The visitors made a bright start, with home keeper Tim Krul making a fine save to deny Alexandre Lacazette after an initial Willock effort had been blocked.

Soon after Onel Hernandez was in the right place to head a corner away from his own goal-line, with Krul having failed to deal with a set-piece delivery which was flicked on by Mustafi.

Krul did well as he kept out a Calum Chambers header from another Mesut Ozil corner and with 21 minutes played the Canaries then broke the deadlock.

Hernandez led a quick counter-attack from just outside his own area, before Kenny McLean fed Teemu Pukki, whose shot took a deflection off Mustafi to leave Bernd Leno well beaten.

A handful of minutes later the Gunners were awarded a penalty as Christoph Zimmermann clearly handled in his own area.

Aubameyang’s spot-kick was kept out by Krul, only for a retake to be ordered for encroachment and the Arsenal skipper made no mistake the second time around to draw the visitors level, despite protests from home fans and players.

The boos turned to cheers just before half-time as Hernandez again caused problems, feeding Todd Cantwell, who slotted home with confidence to make the score 2-1 to the hosts.

There were no changes from either side at the interval, with Max Aarons making a vital defensive clearance as the visitors started brightly.

And they were rewarded just before the hour mark as Aubameyang swept home his second goal and second equaliser of the game, being in the right place after the hosts were unable to fully clear an Ozil corner.

Almost immediately the Canaries had a chance to restore their lead, only for Leno to make a superb finger-tip save to deny McLean.

The German keeper was alert soon after to deny Pukki his second goal of the game, with City pushing on in a bid to try and move ahead for the third time in the contest.

Both sides opened up as time ticked away at Carrow Road, with Leno saving from Aarons before Amadou made a crucial block right at the death to deny Lucas Torreira.
