Liverpool will be looking to close out their Premier League winning season on a high when they travel to St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle United.
Jurgen Klopp and his side lifted the league trophy last Wednesday following their 5-3 victory over Chelsea. This was Liverpool’s first win in three games following an earlier 1-1 draw with Burnley and last week’s 2-1 loss away against Arsenal.
Newcastle will also be looking to end the season on a positive note. Steve Bruce and his men are currently in the midst of a five-match winless run which started just after their 4-1 win over Bournemouth at the start of July.
The bookmakers don’t expect much from United having priced the Magpies at 13/2. Liverpool, meanwhile, are priced as they overwhelming favourites and they are currently available at 4/11.
One stat which may give the home side encouragement concerns Liverpool’s recent away form. The Reds have won just one of their last seven away fixtures across all competitions.
Since their 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in Spain, Klopp’s men went on to lose four more away fixtures while also enduring one draw and earning one win away in Brighton.
Clearly this is an aspect of Liverpool’s game that Newcastle could exploit in this upcoming showdown between two history-rich Premier League clubs.
However, if Newcastle are to pull off a victory, they will first have to overcome some of their unimpressive stats against the Reds.
The Magpies last won against Liverpool back in 2015. Since then, Steve Bruce’s side have been winless against their upcoming opponents in six straight games. What’s more, four of their most recent encounters have all ended in Liverpool victories.
Looking at the betting, our recommendation is to back a 3-1 victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side. This was the score line earlier this season and it’s also worth pointing out that Liverpool have scored three or more goals in all three of their most recent encounters with Newcastle.
