Newcastle look to build on their big win over Sheffield United at the weekend when they welcome relegation-battlers Aston Villa to St. James’ Park on Wednesday.
The Magpies have set a good precedent behind closed doors, recording the biggest league win of Steve Bruce’s time in charge as they comfortably beat Champions League-chasing Sheffield United 3-0 on Sunday, although they had John Egan’s red card early in the second half to thank before romping home to the comfortable win.
There may be some rotation here for the hosts as they look to a potentially season-defining FA Cup quarter-final at the weekend amid a busy schedule on their return from the three-month break, though you can expect the usual front three to start after strong performances last time out, with an assist for Miguel Almiron and goals for Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton.
The Brazilian striker ended a Premier League goalscoring drought that stretched back to August with just his second league goal of the season to cap off Sunday’s win, and he’s the favourite to notch again here - 15/8 anytime or 11/2 first.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain in trouble. Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea leaves them second-bottom, though they still have plenty to play for, only one point adrift of safety. Dean Smith’s men have been unable to kickstart their season after the season with a draw and a defeat since the restart, with their run of form stretching to six defeats and one draw from their last seven outings in all competitions.
They did manage to beat Newcastle, 2-0, in the reverse fixture back in November, one of just seven wins from 30 league matches so far. They’ve lost 18 matches so far; only bottom side Norwich have lost more.
We recommend backing both teams not to score here at odds of 19/20. Newcastle have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four home league matches.
