Frankly it’s hard to argue against Leicester’s fine run continuing.

They’ve won 10 of their last 11 in all competitions and now face a managerless team, with just a single league victory to their name.

Quique Sanchez Flores bit the dust after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Southampton which means Watford have already dismissed two managers this season. However, unlike last time they don’t appear to have a successor ‘oven ready’, to use an en vogue phrase.

A team that has been poor throughout the season can’t really be expected to change greatly under interim management of Hayden Mullins and Graham Stack.

What they may do is throw Troy Deeney back into the fray. He hasn’t started since August due to injury but he did make a substitute appearance against Burnley recently. Given the Hornets’ position and lack of goals – they’ve managed a league-low nine so far – it may be a gamble worth taking.

However, the speed and creativity of Leicester should take care of this game, even if Brendan Rodgers decides he can afford to rest a player or two given how busy the next five weeks are.

A home win to nil (5/4) looks fairly likely but also short enough, so instead try a correct-score punt with 2-0 looking decent value at 13/2.

Three of the Foxes’ last four games have ended this way and we’re getting to the time of year where game management becomes increasingly important – managers will want to save energy in second halves if they can, so if Leicester do take control, don’t expect them to be going full pelt for the full 90 minutes.

A cards bet also catches the eye.

Leicester are the best-behaved team in the top flight, picking up just 12 yellow cards so far. Watford have 27.

You can get 17/20 about Watford having more in this game (via bet365’s Asian handicap market) and that looks worth snapping up.

Only two referees average more cards than Craig Pawson this season and he also awards more fouls than any other ref, so expect the teams’ long-term discipline to be reflected by the names in his notebook.

Jamie Vardy netted for a seventh Premier League game running as Leicester reclaimed second spot from Manchester City.

Watford remain rooted to the foot of the table after an evening when they failed to offer enough going forward at the King Power Stadium.

The Hornets worked hard at the back but rarely looked like getting anything after Vardy netted from a softly-awarded penalty early in the second half.

The Foxes were out of the blocks in quick fashion but Ayoze Perez failed to find his range with two glaring chances.

He was teed-up first by Vardy inside two minutes, who might have been offside, but the VAR officials were spared the need for a review as Perez blazed high over the bar from close range.

The forward again let Watford off the hook after five minutes, skewing a volley well off target when he really should have been testing Ben Foster.

The home side would live to regret that early profligacy, while a nervy Watford backline got to terms with their challenge in the remainder of the first half.

James Maddison and Harvey Barnes combined, though the latter found a tight angle against him midway through opening half.

At the other end, Ismaila Sarr set up Hornets skipper Troy Deeney for an attempt on the target, but his effort was blocked.

In a moment that summed up Leicester’s growing frustration, Vardy went to ground under a challenge from Adrian Mariappa and was duly booked by Craig Pawson for simulation, with a VAR review backing up the on-field assessment.

On the stroke of half-time, Gerard Deulofeu threatened to put the visitors into a surprise lead but his shot cannoned wide off Deeney.

Perez was hooked at the interval, replaced by Dennis Praet, and Leicester didn’t have long to wait for their breakthrough goal.

Jonny Evans was adjudged to have been fouled by Adam Masina and this time the Foxes had their spot-kick; though in truth it seemed a harsh award. Vardy, typically, took his chance and netted his 14th goal of another super season, while the strike was his 50th at home for the Foxes in the Premier League.

Just beyond the hour, the Foxes frontman almost had his second.

He dinked the ball beyond Foster but a superb sliding clearance from Masina thwarted Vardy on this occasion.

Sarr and Deulofeu continued to try and threaten at the other end, whenever Watford could secure possession, but it was in vain as Leicester’s ultra-stubborn defence posted another shutout.

Deep into stoppage time, Mariappa coughed up possession in his own half, allowing Maddison to cruise through and make sure of the points for the high-flying Foxes.

Match-winner Vardy has now scored 23 goals in 25 games under Brendan Rodgers in the Premier League.
