Chelsea v Newcastle United

N'Golo Kante will miss Chelsea's home clash with Newcastle on Saturday although Mateo Kovacic could be fit.

Kante has a groin injury and has been ruled out by boss Frank Lampard for the visit of the Magpies. However, fellow midfielder Kovacic has made a return to training and could be an option for the Stamford Bridge clash.
The Chelsea boss revealed his frustration at the fact the former Leicester man was ruled out by France over the international break, but did not report back for assessment until after his country's second game last week against Iceland.
Lampard also told his press conference that defender Antonio Rudiger is back in training but unlikely to feature, while centre-back Andreas Christensen remains out.
The Blues are in improved form after a stuttering start to the season and will be looking for their fifth straight win in all competitions against Steve Bruce's side, who secured a much-needed 1-0 win over Manchester United before the international break.
Newcastle, who are 16th and just a point clear of the bottom three despite that win, have Matt Ritchie and Florian Lejeune out injured although Bruce confirmed the duo are both making good strides in training and should be back by the end of the month.
Matty Longstaff, who scored the winner on his full debut against the Red Devils, is expected to keep his place in midfield, with Bruce admitting he cannot leave the youngster out after his recent heroics.

Newcastle head into this upcoming game with Chelsea with some newly found momentum following their 1-0 win over Manchester United.

However, there are a couple of things that have to be mentioned. Firstly, is beating Manchester United as big of a deal as it was a decade ago? And secondly, has the international break but the ‘breaks’ on Newcastle’s newly found momentum?

Both of these questions will no doubt be answered this Saturday when Steve Bruce’s side travel to Stamford Bridge.

One thing is for sure – the Magpies don’t have a recent good record against the Blues. In fact, Chelsea have won their last six Premier league home games against Newcastle. At the same time, they managed to score 17 goals and concede just three.

United have managed only one win from 25 league trips away to Stamford Bridge. This came all the way back in 2012 when Alan Pardew was the man in the dugout for Newcastle.

Despite this, there may be hope for the visitors. This season Chelsea’s home form has been woeful with Frank Lampard’s side managing one win from four.

Nevertheless, looking at the betting we simply have to go with the home side. Newcastle have won two games from eight this season and they’ve only managed to score on five occasions.

With that in mind, the recommendation is for Chelsea to win to nil and earn only their second Premier League clean sheet of the season.

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

Chelsea moved into the top four as Marcos Alonso's strike proved the difference against a battling Newcastle United side at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues made it five straight wins in all competitions but had to work hard for the points as they came up against a resilient Magpies side.
It looked like it might not be Chelsea’s day as Frank Lampard’s youngsters passed up several good chances before eventually making the breakthrough in the 73rd minute via Alonso’s low drive to record a seventh successive win over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
Steve Bruce’s visitors actually made the brighter start and had a couple of early half chances as they attempted to pick up from where they left off following their win over Manchester United before the international break.
However, with all of Chelsea’s attacking quality, it was no surprise they created the first clear cut chance of the half, Willian missing the target with a header from close range.
Mason Mount was then given too much room inside the box as he turned and got a shot away, only for Martin Dubravka, who nearly gifted Tammy Abraham the opener when closed down from a clearance, to push the effort away.
Newcastle’s best opening came from good work by Allain Saint-Maximin as he closed down Cesar Azipilcueta before his cross found Joelinton, who couldn’t hit the target with his header on the stretch.
The chances dried up for the visitors after the break as Chelsea took a stranglehold on the game, Abraham hitting the bar with a header before flashing another opportunity over the crossbar.
Dubravka then produced a marvellous save to deny Christian Pulisic when one-on-one as it looked like it might not be the home side’s day.
However, the decisive moment eventually arrived when a low ball across the box wasn’t dealt with, arriving at the feet of Alonso, who managed to squeeze his shot past Dubravka, despite the Slovakia international getting a hand to it.
DeAndre Yedlin then produced a remarkable block to stop Abraham putting the game to bed with a second for Chelsea but Newcastle, the joint-lowest scorers in the Premier League failed to fashion a chance for an equaliser as they slipped back into the bottom three.
