Cardiff City v Chelsea

Date published: 3/31/2019 5:12:34 PM

Cardiff will look to claim their first top-flight win over Chelsea since 1961 when they go head-to-head on Sunday.

bet365 pre-match odds: Cardiff 8/1, Draw 7/2, Chelsea 4/9

MATCH PREVIEW

The Bluebirds remain hopeful of beating the drop but Sunday’s meeting is unlikely to provide them with much joy.

They did claim a win prior to the international break, beating West Ham 2-0, to end a run of three successive defeats.

Six of their eight victories this season have come at the Cardiff City Stadium but they have failed to claim a single point against top-six opposition.

Neil Warnock has confirmed that utility man Callum Paterson will not feature again this season after picking up an injury on international duty with Scotland.

Sol Bamba is a long-term absentee and Sunday’s engagement comes too soon for fellow defender Jazz Richards.

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Everton last time out and are without a win in two after also being held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves.

Games away from home have proved troublesome for the Blues in 2019, losing four of five and failing to score in each of those defeats.

But Maurizio Sarri will be confident of improving on that record when they head to Wales.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ethan Ampadu are being monitored after missing international duty with England and Wales respectively.

Callum Hudson-Odoi could earn his first Premier League start after catching the eye with some impressive performances for England.

Cardiff’s most recent victory over Chelsea came back in October 1986 when they clashed at Ninian Park in the League Cup.

BETTING ADVICE

Cardiff’s fight for survival continues this Sunday when they host top four contenders Chelsea.

The Welsh outfit arguably come into this game with bigger momentum than their London opponents. Neil Warnock’s side picked up a solid 2-0 win over West Ham just before the international break while Chelsea suffered a hugely disappointing 2-0 defeat to Everton.

Cardiff are now five points from safety after both Burnley and Southampton picked up vital wins over Wolves and Brighton.

Chelsea, on the other hand, find themselves four points adrift of the top four. A win today will close the gap to Manchester United to just a single point.

When it comes to the head to head record, it is Chelsea who have been more superior. The Blues have won four straight encounters; three of them by the scoreline of 4-1.

Interestingly, in all four encounters, Chelsea have conceded at least one goal. With the Blues in poor form, it may be worth taking a look at the both teams to score market which is currently priced at around even money.

When it comes to the result itself, Chelsea should be able to get the job done. With that in mind, the recommendation is an away win and a goal for Eden Hazard.

    Cardiff City 1-2 Chelsea

    Date published: 3/31/2019 6:06:12 PM

Lethargic Chelsea scored twice in the last six minutes as they came from behind to win 2-1 at relegation-threatened Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds looked set to win only their ninth match of the campaign until Cesar Azpilicueta headed home from what appeared to be an offside position and substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek then grabbed a 90th-minute winner for the visitors.
Victories on Saturday for Burnley, Crystal Palace and Southampton had piled the pressure on Neil Warnock's team who are now five points away from safety with only seven games of the season left.
A dull first half of few chances was edged by Chelsea who had penalty appeals ignored in the fourth minute when Antonio Rudiger fell to the ground. Eight minutes later Pedro beat Sean Morrison but then curled a 20-yard shot onto the roof of the net.
At the other end, Josh Murphy's shot flew wide and, just past the half-hour mark, Lee Peltier's sidefooted effort was straight at Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa.
Seven minutes before the interval Willian narrowly failed to hit the target with a free-kick before Marcos Alonso contrived to slice a shot from only eight yards out wide of the Bluebirds goal.
The match opened up in the second half and, soon after the restart, Victor Camarasa volleyed Harry Arter's cross past Kepa to give Cardiff a shock lead.
Maurizio Sarri responded to his side going behind by bringing Eden Hazard on for Pedro but the home team continued to play well.
Chelsea were restricted to half-chances with Mateo Kovacic blasting a 25-yard shot over Neil Etheridge's goal before Loftus-Cheek was unable to force the ball home after a goalmouth scramble.
Willian flashed a shot across the face of goal with 15 minutes remaining but, in the 84th minute, Azpilicueta scored the controversial equaliser before Loftus-Cheek got his head to Willian's cross to boost the Blues' push for the top four and potentially condemn Cardiff.
