Premier League Betting Tips: Arsenal v Liverpool

Date published: 7/14/2020 8:17:05 PM

Liverpool travel to Arsenal in Wednesday evening’s marquee Premier League fixture.

This fixture has been one of the more reliably high-scoring in recent seasons, with the last clash an unforgettable 5-5 draw in the League Cup last October. Jurgen Klopp's champions have tended to score freely against the Gunners in recent years, beating them 3-1 in the reverse fixture at Anfield and 5-1 in the meeting before that.

But a 4-3 win on the opening day of the 2016-17 season is Klopp's only win at the Emirates, with the last two ending as score draws.

Given that, it's worth considering another high-scoring match here. Over 2.5 goals is priced at 4/7 and both teams to score is 8/15.

Both sides come into this match-up looking to bounce back from disappointing results at the weekend. Liverpool lost their 100% home win record with a 1-1 draw against midtable Burnley, while Arsenal lost 2-1 to local rivals Tottenham after going ahead in Sunday's North London derby.

You can expect Klopp to go with a full-strength team for the visitors here, with Joe Gomez in line for the injured Joel Matip in defence and Naby Keita in for sidelined skipper Jordan Henderson. Arsenal, meanwhile, are expected to recall breakthrough starlet Bukayo Saka, who only made a cameo from the bench at the weekend.

We recommend backing a score draw here. Liverpool haven’t quite recovered their pre-lockdown form, while Arsenal have shown signs of improvement under Mikel Arteta of late. A draw is priced at 3/1, both teams to score and draw is 7/2 and a high-scoring 2-2 is 12/1.

Team News for Arsenal v Liverpool

Arsenal have no fresh injury concerns ahead of their meeting with new Premier League champions Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Eddie Nketiah serves the second of a three-match ban for his dismissal against Leicester, while the Gunners official line on Mesut Ozil’s continued absence from the squad is that he is still suffering from “back soreness”.

Pablo Mari (ankle), Bernd Leno, Gabriel Martinelli and Calum Chambers (all knee) remain sidelined.

Midfielder James Milner is unlikely to be fit having missed the weekend draw with Burnley because of a minor muscle problem.

Manager Jurgen Klopp expects the 34-year-old to be ready to face Chelsea at home next week, however.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to return at right-back, having been rested on Saturday, and Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, against his former club, look set to contest one midfield place.

Provisional Arsenal squad: Martinez, Macey, Bellerin, Soares, Sokratis, Luiz, Holding, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Tierney, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Torreira, Ceballos, Maitland-Niles, Willock, Ozil, Nelson, Pepe, Aubameyang, Lacazette.

Provisional Liverpool squad: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Keita, Salah, Firmino, Mane, Adrian, Williams, Lovren, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Origi, Elliott, Jones, Shaqiri.

Arsenal punish Liverpool for defensive errors

Arsenal took advantage of two Liverpool errors to end the new Premier League champions’ quest for a record-breaking points tally and maintain their slim hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.

The Gunners had not beaten Liverpool in their last nine league meetings but a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium, their goals coming from their only shots on target, left Mikel Arteta’s side ninth – only three points behind sixth-placed Wolves.

When Sadio Mane gave the visitors the lead it looked to be the same old story for Arsenal against their so-called top-six rivals, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson pounced on costly mistakes to turn the game around before the interval.

Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson were the guilty parties, with the defeat meaning Jurgen Klopp’s runaway side will now fall short in their attempt to end the campaign with 100-plus points.

Arteta, making five changes with an eye on Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City, opted to drop the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Dani Ceballos and Hector Bellerin to the bench.

The hosts survived an early scare as goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s clearance was charged down by Roberto Firmino, with the ball hitting the base of the post before squirming behind.

Liverpool did not have to wait too long to break the deadlock, Firmino and Andy Robertson combining down the left to tee up Mane, who finished off the move with ease.

Van Dijk has rightly been praised for his performances at the heart of the Liverpool defence but he gifted Arsenal their equaliser.

The Holland international was pressed by Nelson and passed the ball straight into the path of Lacazette, who was left with a simple finish to haul Arsenal level with his third goal in his last four games.

Things went from bad to worse for the Liverpool defence before the break, with goalkeeper Alisson looking to play out from the back but only picking out an alert Lacazette, who played in Nelson to give Arsenal the lead.

Klopp was quick down the tunnel at the interval having silently fumed in his seat as the first half wore on.

His side continued to have the better of the ball after the restart and Mohamed Salah’s fine piece of skill left David Luiz on the ground, but Martinez was equal to the Egyptian’s strike, tipping it over the crossbar.

Arteta responded with a triple change, introducing captain and top goalscorer Aubameyang as well as Ceballos and Joe Willock.

It was Liverpool’s own substitute, Takumi Minamino, who shot wide soon after he had come off the bench, while Salah fluffed his lines with a back-post header that ended up straight in the hands of Martinez.

Arsenal were doing well to limit Liverpool to occasional chances and even had an opportunity to wrap up the points in the last minute, only for Willock to slash his shot wide.

Arsenal still saw out the contest, Arteta getting the better of Klopp and seeing his side bounce back from derby defeat at Tottenham, courtesy in the main to Liverpool’s lax defending.
