Lincoln City v Oxford United - Preview

Michael Appleton without Joe Walsh for Lincoln’s clash with Oxford

Lincoln manager Michael Appleton is without Joe Walsh when his side start their Sky Bet League One campaign against Oxford on Saturday.

Defender Walsh, a summer signing from MK Dons, has been ruled out with a thigh strain.

Experienced midfielder Liam Bridcutt has a chance of being involved as he continues to recover from a hamstring problem.

On-loan West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer has already started the Imps’ first two matches of the season and looks likely to continue against last season’s play-off final runners-up.

Oxford manager Karl Robinson, who put pen to paper on a new four-year deal on Wednesday, will be without Jamie Hanson.

Midfielder Hanson sustained a calf injury and will be ruled out for three to four weeks.

Alex Gorrin picked up a knock during his side’s Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon and it remains to be seen whether the midfielder will recover in time.

Robinson will be hoping for a good start to the season after his side fell just short of promotion in the play-off final, losing 2-1 to Wycombe.

New-look Lincoln ease to victory against Oxford

Goals from Anthony Scully and Adam Jackson saw new-look Lincoln claim a 2-0 win over Oxford.

The Imps took the lead in the seventh minute when Harry Anderson galloped down the right flank and picked out Scully with an exquisite cross which was nodded home by the Irishman.

Lincoln played some terrific football before the break and James Jones almost made it 2-0 when an audacious effort from the corner of the box was tipped over by goalkeeper Simon Eastwood.

Oxford showed more urgency in the opening stages of the second half and Lincoln keeper Alex Palmer made good saves to deny Cameron Brannagan and Mark Sykes around the hour mark.

However, Oxford’s momentum ebbed away and the home side scored the game-clinching second goal 16 minutes from time when a free-kick from Jones was powered home by the head of defender Jackson.

A frustrating afternoon for the U’s continued as they were denied by a fantastic double save from Palmer.

They ended the match with 10 men as Rob Atkinson was shown a straight red card in stoppage time for scything down Anderson.
