Manchester United 1-1 Rochdale

Manchester United advanced into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup but needed penalties to beat Rochdale at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils entered the hat for the fourth round on Wednesday night but they produced an unconvincing performance. United were boosted before kick-off with the news that Paul Pogba returned to the starting XI, and he was part of nine changes following the 2-0 defeat to West Ham United.

After a slow start, United finally registered their first shot on target in the 15th minute when Andreas Pereira stung the palms of Robert Sanchez.

Sanchez was then on hand to deny Marcos Rojo after the defender tried to open the scoring with a header at the back post. The best chance of the first half fell to Pogba, who looked stunned after he headed over Mason Greenwood’s cross from close range.

At the start of the second half, Callum Camps came within inches of scoring but his flick was cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

United eventually opened the scoring through Mason Greenwood in the 68th minute. The young striker managed to turn in the box before firing past Sanchez with his left foot. The home side only held the lead for nine minutes though, with 16-year-old Luke Matheson grabbing an equaliser.

The right-back charged into the box and volleyed past a crowd of bodies to give the travelling fans a glimmer of hope. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer through on Dan James and Juan Mata in the closing stages but neither could find a winner in regulation time.

Rochdale made a positive start to the shootout, with Calvin Andrew scoring to make it 1-1 after Mata had converted. However, Jimmy Keohane saw his tame shot saved by Sergio Romero and that handed the advantage to United.

They did not spurn the opportunity and efforts from Andreas Pereira, Fred, Greenwood and James ensured they progressed 5-3 on penalties.
