West Bromwich Albion v Harrogate Town - Preview

Slaven Bilic to ring the changes for West Brom’s clash with Harrogate

West Brom boss Slaven Bilic is expected to make changes for the Carabao Cup visit of Harrogate.

Goalkeeper David Button could make his Albion debut with Ahmed Hegazi, Charlie Austin, Kamil Grosicki and Rekeem Harper all pushing to start.

Matt Phillips missed Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Leicester with a back injury but he could return to the squad to face the Sky Bet League Two newcomers.

Conor Townsend is recovering from an ankle injury and is unlikely to feature and striker Kenneth Zohore (calf) is out.

Harrogate have a fully-fit squad for the trip to The Hawthorns, with the exception of James Belshaw.

The goalkeeper is out with the thumb injury he suffered in pre-season and is not expected to return until the end of the month.

Simon Weaver’s side marked their first game in the EFL with a 4-0 win at Southend on Saturday.

The boss is expected to name a similar side to the one which won at Roots Hall.

Carabao Cup Betting Tips: West Brom v Harrogate Town

West Bromwich Albion host League Two side Harrogate Town in Wednesday Night Carabao Cup action.

Both of these sides enjoyed promotions last term, and both will likely prioritise consolidating their place in their respective divisions ahead of a cup run this season.

But the Baggies went on a run in the FA Cup last term, reaching the last 16 and pushing Newcastle, in spite of their automatic promotion push in the Championship taking priority. Harrogate, meanwhile, are debutants in this competition, having made it up to the Football League for the first time in their 106-year history in the summer.

Town have made a great start to the season, too, beating Tranmere Rovers on penalties (following a 1-1 draw) in the first round of this competition, and making a dream start to the League Two season with an emphatic 4-0 away victory down at Southend on Saturday.

West Brom, meanwhile, didn’t get the return to the Premier League they were hoping for, well-beaten 3-0 by Leicester City on Sunday.

Paddy Power, unsurprisingly, back the hosts as the strong favourites here, at 3/10 for the victory in 90 minutes, a draw at 4/1 and the visitors a massive 7/1 - they’re just 1/8 to qualify on the night, while Harrogate’s odds reduce to 5/1 to qualify via a penalty shootout.

Expect Harrogate to make a good go of this with close to their strongest XI, but plenty of changes from Baggies boss Bilic, who could bring in the likes of Charlie Austin, Ahmed Hegazi and Kamil Grosicki - all unused substitutes at the Hawthorns at the weekend - as he keeps one eye on getting off the mark in their next Premier League match.

We recommend backing Charlie Austin to score first here. The experienced striker had a prolific record against lower-league opposition back in his Swindon Town days and scored a respectable 10 goals for the Baggies last term - he’ll back himself to notch against a fourth-tier club.

West Brom ease past Harrogate to progress into third round of Carabao Cup

West Brom breezed past Harrogate 3-0 to book their spot in the Carabao Cup third round.

Rekeem Harper, Hal Robson-Kanu and Callum Robinson struck as the Baggies avoided an upset on a routine win against their Sky Bet League Two visitors.

Gutsy Town battled well but were ultimately undone by three moments of quality from their Premier League hosts.

Simon Weaver’s side made a vibrant start, determined to pin Albion back, but the hosts put them in their place with two goals in four minutes.

The Baggies had shown little attacking threat before Harper, after 18 minutes, collected a poor clearance 30 yards out.

The midfielder turned away from George Thomson and Josh Falkingham before drilling a low strike into the corner.

Kamil Grosicki was then denied by Joe Cracknell before Robson-Kanu doubled the hosts’ lead with his first goal in the competition for 10 years.

The captain collected Cedric Kipre’s pass and was given too much time to turn and curl a fine effort into the top corner from 25 yards.

The visitors refused to fold though and David Button, making his debut after a summer switch from Brighton, turned Aaron Martin’s header away.

The goalkeeper also gathered Mark Beck’s header nine minutes before the break.

Despite the chances Albion were in control and Charlie Austin almost put the game out of sight immediately after half time when he turned Kyle Edwards’ cross wide.

All the Baggies had to do was keep their concentration and, while veteran Jon Stead occasionally unsettled the defence, there was rarely any serious danger.

Austin wasted a golden chance after 67 minutes when, unmarked, he collected Matt Phillips’ centre only to allow Warren Burrell to block his shot on the line.

It gave Harrogate hope and a minute later Connor Hall headed over Thomson’s corner.

But Robinson booked Albion’s progression with 13 minutes left, tapping in after Edwards’ excellent darting run.
