Marcus Rashford scored both of Manchester United’s goals as they clinched a fine 2-1 win against Chelsea to reach the last eight of the Carabao Cup.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team have now won three matches in a row in all competitions since drawing 1-1 with Liverpool earlier this month.
United, who made four changes to the team that won 3-1 against struggling Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday, started the fourth-round tie at Stamford Bridge well and Scott McTominay swept an early shot into the side-netting.
The visitors deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute thanks to Rashford’s spot-kick after Daniel James had gone down under Marcos Alonso’s challenge and United remained 1-0 ahead at the break.
Christian Pulisic, who scored a hat-trick in Chelsea’s excellent 4-2 win at Burnley on Saturday, dragged a shot wide for Frank Lampard’s team who equalised soon after the hour mark when Michy Batshuayi latched on a to long goal-kick and crashed a 20-yard shot home.
However, United restored their lead in the 73rd minute and once again it was Rashford who scored, this time with a stupendous a 30-yard free-kick.
Kurt Zouma flicked a late header wide for the home team but Chelsea could not force a second equaliser and it will be United who are involved in the quarter-final draw on Thursday morning.
