Millwall v Huddersfield Town - Team Report

Millwall without injured winger Mason Bennett for Huddersfield encounter

Millwall will be without Derby loanee Mason Bennett for their home fixture with Huddersfield on the final day of the Sky Bet Championship season.

The winger suffered a hamstring injury in the early stages of last weekend’s defeat at QPR and will miss Wednesday’s game at The Den.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson replaced Bennett in the 11th minute, but Lions boss Gary Rowett could also turn to Jayson Molumby or Matt Smith after both scored off the bench on Saturday.

Rowett hinted post-match he would still play his strongest possible team for the visit of the Terriers, despite Millwall’s play-off ambitions ending following their 4-3 defeat.

Huddersfield secured survival with a 2-1 win over promotion-chasing West Brom on Friday, but sacked manager Danny Cowley less than 48 hours later.

Academy coach Danny Schofield will take charge of this fixture at The Den and be supported by defender Tommy Elphick, who is on his way back to fitness after a long-term knee injury.

The Terriers’ caretaker boss could decide to change things up and may turn his focus to some of the younger players, who he worked with in the academy.

On-loan Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe scored the winner against West Brom as a substitute while forward Fraizer Campbell has been nursing an Achilles injury recently and could be rested.

Championship Betting Tips: Millwall v Huddersfield

There’s little riding between Millwall and Huddersfield in this final day clash, with the two sides that have confirmed their place in the division next year in the weekend just gone by.

Millwall lost 4-3 to QPR and have fallen out of play-off contention while the Terriers all-but confirmed their survival with an impressive 2-1 victory over high-flying promotion-chasers West Brom.

Millwall were uncharacteristically defensively suspect in Saturday’s London derby defeat to QPR. Their hopes of catching sixth-place Cardiff were already slim at best, but now they’re left with little to play for in this final match, falling five points behind.

The Lions came away with a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture last September, a match that was notable for having different coaches in the dugouts.

That’s because Huddersfield have announced the shock sacking of manager Danny Cowley, after the highly-rated up-and-coming former Lincoln coach led them to a 2-1 victory over West Brom last Friday - a result that moves them three points clear of 22nd-place Luton. With far superior goal difference, they can consider themselves safe here.

Gary Rowett’s Lions tend to keep things tight at home, in contrast to the madcap seven-goal thriller they were on the wrong end of at Loftus Road at the weekend. Eight of the last nine games have featured two goals or fewer, and under 2.5 goals is priced at 10/11 here.

Given the change of coach, it remains to be seen exactly how the new caretaker coach will approach this game, but look to maintain their recent form - the Terriers are unbeaten in their last three away games, keeping a clean sheet in each. Two of those outings have been goalless draws, and we recommend backing another one here - 0-0 is available at 10/1.

Millwall 4-1 Huddersfield Town - Match Report

Millwall end season on high with convincing victory over Huddersfield

Millwall bounced back from missing out on the play-offs to end the Sky Bet Championship season with a 4-1 home win over Huddersfield.

Second-half goals from Jake Cooper and substitutes Jiri Skalak and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson added to Connor Mahoney’s early opener at the Den.

Karlan Grant replied for Huddersfield to ensure it was level at the break, but the Yorkshire outfit concluded their first term back in the second tier, after relegation from the Premier League, with a 21st loss of the season.

This was the only game in the Championship involving a London club with nothing to play for after Millwall’s play-off hopes ended at the weekend, while the Terriers clinched safety with a shock 2-1 win over West Brom.

Huddersfield sacked Danny Cowley 48 hours later and caretaker David Schofield was dealt a blow when Christopher Schindler was deemed unavailable after falling ill before kick-off.

It meant the German’s record of playing every minute in the league this season ended.

Lions boss Gary Rowett made seven changes from the side that lost at QPR and two of them combined for the opener after four minutes.

Forward Matt Smith knocked down for Mahoney, who showed great composure to dribble past two opponents before he rifled into the bottom corner for his third goal of the term.

Managerless Huddersfield created their first genuine opportunity after the drinks break, but Alex Pritchard’s close-range header was blocked and Andy King’s shot from the edge of the area flew off target in the 24th minute.

Schofield would have been pleased with their ball retention and their next slick move 12 minutes later resulted in the equaliser.

Trevor Chalobah stepped out with the ball and found Alex Pritchard, who was brought down, but referee Keith Stroud let play carry on and Grant made the most of the fine pass into him with an excellent finish for his 19th goal of the season.

It remained level until the break and yet once again Huddersfield, who introduced Micah Obiero for his professional debut during the interval, were caught cold at the beginning of the second half.

An excellent corner from Mahoney picked out Cooper at the back post and the defender powered home to make it 2-1 with 47 on the clock.

There was almost an immediate response for the Terriers, but Bartosz Bialkowski denied Grant from a tight angle before King fired over the rebound.

With both clubs having little to play for, Rowett gave a debut to teenager Hayden Muller in the 61st minute and Skalak was also introduced.

It was the latter who made an instant impact, with the winger racing through to make it 3-1 two minutes after he entered the pitch.

Another substitute wrapped up the scoring at the Den with 11 minutes left when Mahoney teed up Bodvarsson for a simple finish from six yards to ensure Millwall ended the season in eighth position.

Given the Lions were 17th when Rowett replaced Neil Harris in October, it offers signs of encouragement for the Londoners ahead of the 2020-21 campaign whereas Huddersfield need to appoint Cowley’s replacement.
