Team news for Leeds United v Stoke City

Leeds have received a double boost ahead of Thursday’s clash with Stoke at Elland Road.

Northern Ireland international Stuart Dallas has recovered from a glute injury which forced him to miss the 3-1 Sky Bet Championship victory at Blackburn.

Helder Costa, who this week agreed to join Leeds on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell from Wolves, is also in contention again following a knee problem.

Influential playmaker Pablo Hernandez hopes to start for the first time since March after recovering from a hamstring injury and making three substitute appearances.

Stoke have no new injury concerns after boosting their survival hopes with a first victory since the restart, winning 4-0 at home to fellow strugglers Barnsley.

But Potters boss Michael O’Neill might consider some changes with “one or two knocks” in the squad and a crunch home game against Birmingham on Sunday.

Tom Ince pushed his claims for a starting spot by coming off the bench against Barnsley and scoring the fourth goal.

Wales midfielder Joe Allen remains out with an Achilles tendon injury suffered in March and is not expected back this season.

Championship Betting Tips: Leeds v Stoke

Leeds United play a key match in their bid to see their promotion push over the line on Thursday, facing a Stoke City side still looking for more points to stay in the division.

It’s crunch time for Marcelo Bielsa’s men as they look to avoid another repeat of last season’s near-miss with promotion, with in-form Brentford snapping at their heels with a 100% winning record since the return.

Leeds haven’t been quite at their best, replicating their pre-lockdown form of five straight victories, all with clean sheets, but they’ve taken a respectable seven points from 12 available (two wins, a draw and a defeat) since the return and could regain a comfortable six-point cushion over Brentford with a home win here. They also put in a dominant display to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 away on Saturday to calm any nerves.

Leeds beat Stoke 3-1 at home in Bielsa’s first game in charge last season and managed a comfortable 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture at the Bet365 Stadium back in August, although Stoke did beat Leeds on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Carabao Cup on their last visit to Elland Road - albeit against a heavily-rotated line-up. Another 3-0 win for Leeds is priced at 17/2, while a repeat of last season’s 3-1 home win is 12/1.

This is Potters manager Michael O’Neill’s first match against Leeds, having been appointed with a brief of steering them to safety back when he was appointed in November. If the table began when the Northern Ireland manager took charge, Stoke would be comfortably 11th in the table, having won 11 and drawn five of his 26 games in the dugout.

However, Stoke come into this match fighting for their lives, having taken just one point from their first three games since the hiatus. They looked much improved in their most recent outing, a brilliant 4-0 thrashing of Barnsley, but coming into this round of fixtures just one point clear of the dropzone there’s plenty more work to be done.

We recommend backing the hosts to win narrowly here. They’ve won seven of the last nine, kept clean sheets in six of those wins, and won three of those via a 1-0 scoreline.

Leeds back on top of the Championship after crushing win over Stoke

Leeds reclaimed top spot in the Sky Bet Championship in convincing style by thrashing Stoke 5-0 at Elland Road.

Mateusz Klich’s first-half penalty and goals from Helder Costa and skipper Liam Cooper inside 10 minutes of the restart put the Whites firmly in control.

Substitute Pablo Hernandez struck a sublime fourth and Patrick Bamford added a fifth in stoppage time as Leeds turned in a classy display to edge closer to automatic promotion.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who leapfrogged West Brom to sit one point clear at the summit, now need seven points from their last four games to guarantee a top-two finish.

Leeds kept their composure in the face of some stubborn first-half resistance and showed no signs of the nerves which unhinged their promotion push last season.

But for several excellent saves from Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland and some superb last-ditch defending, the margin of victory could have been bigger.

Tyler Roberts forced Butland into a flying save inside the first 60 seconds, but Leeds had to wait another 15 minutes for their next attempt on goal, with Bamford firing over from outside the penalty area.

Leeds began to find their passing range as the first half progressed and only some heroic Stoke defending kept them at bay.

James McClean and Danny Batth pulled off successive goal-line clearances to keep out efforts from Bamford and Roberts as Leeds cranked up the pressure.

Jack Harrison failed to keep his shot on target, but just as it seemed Stoke would hold out until the break, they gave away a needless penalty.

Tommy Smith’s rash challenge on Costa left referee Darren Bond with no option and Klich coolly converted his seventh goal of the season.

Hernandez replaced Roberts during the interval and within two minutes of the restart the home side had doubled their lead.

Dallas’s ball into the area behind Stoke substitute James Chester picked out Costa and the Portuguese’s toe-poked finish nestled inside the far post.

Bamford’s snap-shot hit the crossbar and the striker then forced an excellent save from Butland as Leeds looked to kill the game off.

Stoke were being pulled out of their defensive shape and Leeds’ third goal duly arrived in the 57th minute when Cooper slammed home from inside the area after being teed-up by Hernandez.

Leeds were running Stoke ragged and Hernandez crashed home a superb fourth goal in the 72nd minute after another sweeping move and Bamford’s dummy on the edge of the area.

Bamford’s low angled finish in time added on flew in off the inside of the far post and completed the rout.
